Schneider-Kreuznach Tele-Xenar 360mm f5.5 lens in Compound III shutter. Serial number 1859309. This lens has good glass front and rear. The shutter supports speeds of 1/100s, 1/75s, 1/50s, 1/25s, 1/10s, 1/5s, 1/2s and 1s. The shutter dial turns easily, but seems faster than the indicated speeds, especially at the slow settings. The aperture blades are beautifully clean and work at all stops. The aperture lever moves smoothly and ranges from f4.5 to f32 – indicating that this shutter has a scale not original to this lens. This lens includes a flange.
The serial number indicates that this lens was likely made in 1942 or 1943 in Bad Kreuznach. The Tele-Xenar is a four-element design with two groups of two cemented elements each. It is a telephoto lens, meaning that the flange distance required to achieve infinity focus is shorter than 360mm, making the long focal distance attainable on 4×5 field cameras with less than 360mm of bellows. The image circle is 252mm or 9.9 inches, which is enough to easily cover 5×7.
