My friends, I am selling my Ross No. 4 portrait lens, serial #2641. This places the year of manufacture in the late 1840s. The condition of the brass is superb – there is tasteful patina. The flange seems to be original, or at least a close match. The hood is present and true. The front glass looks great (there are some bubbles, as to be expected with 1840s glass technology). The rear glass has faint wipe marks, but these are only visible if you look closely. There are no major scratches or nicks in the glass. The lens comes apart easily, and the focusing knob works well with all screws present. The waterhouse slot is present, but the lens does not come with any stops.
The Ross No. 4 is a 380mm (15″) focal length lens with an aperture of f3.3. It is designed to cover 8×10, but I believe it will illuminate 11×14.
Regrettably I never got to shoot this – the only 8×10 camera I have that can support it is my Deardorff P8, and I don’t have a studio space to set up the P8 in. I’d rather see this lens go to a working studio than sit forever in my office, gathering dust.
