Carl Zeiss Biotessar 13.5cm (135mm) f2.8 lens in barrel. Serial number 1125706. This lens has a light color sheen on the front group, and light surface degradation on the rear element, as well as several pits. The rear group is slightly loose in its housing. The barrel contained an aperture mechanism but this has been removed. This lens does not include a flange.
The serial number indicates that this lens was made in 1930 in Jena. The Biotessar was Zeiss’ top of the line large format lens, and was renowned to be sharp throughout its aperture range. It contains six elements in three groups and will cover 4×5. This particular lens is in ugly condition, and likely will not retain the sharpness that the lens was designed for. Use it for a bargain fast large format lens when speed and the Zeiss look are more important than ultimate sharpness.
